This week I read:
"Betrayal" by Harold Pinter
I had a bad Pinter experience my first semester as a theater major in college. I had to analyze "The Homecoming" as a group project for a quarter of my grade and it was all very overwhelming and stressful. I've stayed away from Pinter ever since. However, I was surprised by how much I appreciated "Betrayal" -- Pinter has a very distinct style of writing, so I didn't go into my reading this week with high hopes. But, to my surprise, I liked the play a lot and I appreciate the nuances. But maybe it's just because I am older now. Who knows.
The play goes in reverse chronology. That's a fun little gimmick that I always enjoy. The play's opening scene shows two people meeting up two years after the end of their affair. Throughout the play, the audience experiences a backwards look at characters lives to explain "what led to what" and how it all started.
Pretty interesting story -- and one where no one is completely innocent.
